Almost finished with primary school? Then a big decision is coming up: which secondary school will you choose?
At Farel, you get the space to discover what you’re good at, try new things, and become more independent. Our teachers know you, help you when needed, and challenge you to get the best out of yourself.
And just as important: we want you to feel at home quickly. Come by, experience the atmosphere, and find out if Farel will be your new school.
Choices, choices...
You’ll feel at home right away. We are an open, friendly school where you quickly make friends and everyone is welcome. Besides the lessons, there’s plenty to do: from sports and music to international projects and cultural activities.
“What I like most about Farel is that we have a fun class and the teachers are nice.” – Jenthe
The transition from primary to secondary school can be exciting. That’s why we start gently: with an introduction week where you get to know your class, a mentor who guides you, and attention to learning how to plan. This way, you build self-confidence step by step.
“The introduction week was fun! We played games to get to know each other, and that made me feel at home right away.” – JD
We think it’s important that you get to know your own talents. Whether you are sporty, creative, or entrepreneurial: there are plenty of opportunities to discover that. You are given the space to make choices that suit you, and you learn to take responsibility for your own learning path.
“I like Dutch the most, because we do activities where you’re really active. And in English (Cambridge) it’s always fun and I learn a lot!” – Jenthe
You are never alone. Your mentor is your main point of contact, and there are student coordinators and teachers who will guide you well. Together, we look at what you need: extra explanation, a bit more challenge, or simply a listening ear.
At Farel, you get the chance to grow. If you are in a combined-level class, you have the time to discover which level suits you best. Many students move up to a higher level during their school years. This way, you get the best out of yourself, at your own pace.
“I would like to join TTO, because I enjoy English and want to study abroad later.” – Tymo
Many students start in a combined class: two levels together. This gives you more time to discover which level suits you best.
At Portus Farel, there are four combined classes:
In addition, we also have single-level classes:
This way, from day one, you can get the best out of yourself and grow at the level that suits you.
At Farel, we work with the Farel Code: our shared agreements about respect, responsibility, and safety. This code helps us create a pleasant and safe school together, where you can learn and develop yourself without disturbance.
That way, we can grow together
I will keep this in my safe
Together we keep it safe and clean

At Farel, we work with 50-minute lessons. Sometimes there is a 40-minute schedule, for example during special activities.
We deliberately choose more, shorter lessons spread throughout the week. This way, you learn better and maintain your concentration – much nicer than one long lesson per week!
You have three breaks a day: time for a sandwich or something from the cafeteria.
And yes… the chicken burger is still a classic 🍔.
Your mentor is your regular guide. Three times a year, you and your parents will have a growth meeting together. You discuss how things are going, what is going well, and where you want to grow further. You will also learn to become more independent, for example by working on planning and study skills.
In between, your mentor regularly has a short conversation with you. This way, you can always share how you are doing, both at school and outside of it.
The student coordinators help with matters such as absenteeism and being late. They work together with mentors and teachers.
At the start of your school career, we administer a DIA test for language and mathematics. This way, we know where you stand and what support you need.
Extra help can, for example, consist of:
This is how we help you grow in learning and as a person—step by step and in a way that suits you.
Jenthe: “I found it quite exciting because of all those big upperclassmen, but luckily we are in the lower school building. That really feels safe.”
Norah: “For me, it was mainly getting used to all those subjects and having to move from classroom to classroom all the time. In primary school, you had just one classroom – that was nice and clear.”
Norah: “Very nice! We played games with the mentor and did a scavenger hunt through the school.”
Jenthe: “Yes, and we went away by bus. That really helped me get to know my class well.”
Jenthe: “English and Cambridge! I like that we do almost everything in English. You learn a lot from it and it’s always fun.”
Norah: “I actually like everything, especially because you notice that you’re getting better and better at speaking English.”
Jenthe: “I visited several schools, but here it just felt right. At other schools I thought, ‘I want to leave,’ but here I actually wanted to stay.”
Norah: “My family used to go here as well. Everyone said it’s a great school – and they’re right!”
Jenthe: “The teachers are really involved. They genuinely want you to do well. And the chicken burgers in the cafeteria, haha! And of course TTO – that really makes our school special.” 🇬🇧
Norah: “And that everyone is friendly. Oh, and the free croissants on Wednesdays! That’s also something typically Farel.” 🥐
Norah: “To the trips and excursions! And of course to England.”
Jenthe: “Me too – and to the musical. We both do theatre as a talent class!”
Jenthe: “Use your locker properly! Otherwise, you’ll really get back pain from that heavy bag.”
Norah: “And plan your homework smartly. Don’t just write down when it has to be finished, but also when you’re going to work on it.”
