At Farelcollege, as a student, you have a lot of say in your school experience. Learning here is not a one-way street from teacher to student, but goes both ways. What would you like to learn? In what areas do you want to develop yourself? That’s why we work with growth conversations and talent hours.
Thinking for yourself about your school career is what you do at Farelcollege. Three times a year, you have a growth meeting. This meeting takes place with your mentor and possibly your parent/guardian. In these meetings, you indicate how things are going, what you would like to learn, and what your goals are. The mentor looks at how we as a school can help you with that. This way, you stay in control.
In addition to the regular subjects such as Dutch and mathematics, we have time in the schedule every week for talent hours. During the first weeks at school, you will get to know the football class, the sports class, the studio (design, art and film), and the studio (music, mixing and recording). After those weeks, you choose a talent class that you will continue with for the rest of the year. Together, you work towards a final product: this could be a tournament, a performance, or a film.
During customized learning hours, you receive the guidance or extra challenge you need. Do you need more explanation for a particular subject? Or do you want to be challenged further with, for example, science or English? All of this is possible during customized learning hours. At the beginning of the first year, the focus is mainly on 'learning how to learn' (study skills). This way, you learn how to best memorize vocabulary and how to plan your homework. You can also complete part of your homework during these hours. Convenient, because there is always a teacher available to help you.
In the first year of secondary school, you are at school every day at 8:45 a.m. You start the day with your entire class and your mentor. Your schedule and homework are reviewed. Do you have everything with you? In which classrooms do you have lessons? Is your phone in your locker? All these kinds of practical matters are discussed. There is room to ask questions if anything is unclear. In addition, during the day start, we always talk about a theme from the booklet De Nieuwe Oase. For example, about working together or having respect for each other. News-related items are also regularly discussed.
