Support and guidance

Portus docent met leerlingen microscoop

At Farelcollege, you receive the guidance you need. We consider this very important. We have various support staff in-house, but if necessary, we can also involve people from outside the school.

Mentor

First of all, there is your mentor whom you can always turn to. Each class has its own mentor. The mentor is present at the day start and helps you if you have any questions. The mentor keeps an eye on you and looks not only at your grades, but also at how you are doing and whether you feel comfortable. Your parents/guardians can also talk to the mentor if they want to know how you are doing at school.

Dyslexia Coaches

Do you have dyslexia and an official diagnosis? Then you will be assigned a dyslexia coach. This coach will help you from your first year with everything you encounter due to your dyslexia. Your parents can also contact this coach with any questions.

Havo and Vwo Ms. Draër

Confidential Advisor

Sometimes you want to talk about something, but you don't want everyone to be involved. For example, if you don't feel safe at school. In that case, you can go to a confidential advisor. They will do everything they can to help you. At our school, you can contact:

Ms. Van der Burg (m.vanderburg@cvo-portus.nl)
Mr. Huijsdens (j.huijsdens@cvo-portus.nl)

Forms of Support

Would you like to know what support options are available at Farelcollege? Then take a look at our school support profile on the website of the Koers VO partnership. On the partnership's website, you can find more information about other support options.

Deans

What do you want to be in the future and which further education or study suits you best? The dean can help you with that. Our deans are:

Vmbo Ms. Hartkoorn
Mavo Ms. Assenberg
Havo Ms. De Kort
Vwo Ms. Goossens

Student Coordinators

The student coordinators are responsible for lateness and absenteeism. What do we mean by absenteeism? That is when you are not at school due to illness or another reason. Everything is recorded and, if necessary, you may have to stay after school and/or your parents will be called. This mainly happens if you do not have a valid reason for being absent. The student coordinators are not just there to hand out punishments; you can always go to them if you want to talk about something.

Support Coordinators

Are you having a really hard time at school and/or at home? And is your mentor or teacher unable to help you with that? Then there is the support coordinator. Together with your parents or guardians, the support coordinator will look at what you need and who can best help you. Sometimes this is someone within the school (for example, the school social worker) and sometimes we seek help from outside (for example, the neighborhood team).

Are you in an unsafe situation at home? In that case, too, the support coordinator is there for you. At our school, these are:
Ms. Van Rikxoort
Ms. De Keizer

Tutoring by Senior Students

At Farelcollege, we offer subject-specific support in the lower grades provided by senior students. They tutor lower-grade students who need extra help. This has proven to be effective and motivating!

Registering for Tutoring
At our school, students can receive a maximum of six consecutive tutoring sessions from a trained senior student. After completion, we evaluate together with the student and subject teacher whether an extension is necessary. Tutoring sessions can be extended if there is no waiting list. Sign up here!

Requesting Tutoring

In consultation with our tutoring coordinator, a senior student is selected. Parents contact us to arrange the location, dates, and times. These agreements are recorded and signed by the student, parents/guardians, and the senior student on an agreement form. A logbook can be used to track progress.

Providing Tutoring

Senior students who wish to provide tutoring can sign up via a form. The subject teacher assesses whether the student is suitable based on knowledge and skills. After approval, they can tutor lower-grade students.
Sign up here!

Evaluation and Responsibilities
After the tutoring period, both the senior student and the student fill in an evaluation form to assess progress. The school mediates and organizes, but is not responsible for the content and agreements between both parties. The costs, €6 per session, are reimbursed by the school.
